The History of Newspapers Today, people can use newspapers to find out many things. One can use the newspaper to check sports scores, get the day's news, read "feel good" stories, or even find out their horoscope. It was not always that way. From the "Acta Diurna," reported in the ancient Roman empire, to the New York Times, newspapers have come a long way. In this report, the distance that newspapers have traveled since their inception is going to be outlined. Before literacy was commonplace in societies, town criers would announce the news of the land to the land's people. These criers used oratory skills to spread the news on crossroads and the marketplace. Messengers would be commissioned to report to the town after battles to report a victory or a defeat to the townspeople. As people became more civilized and language and literacy was developed, news that was delivered by spoken word was starting to be written down. In 59 BC, Julius Caesar released the "Acta Diurana." This was a daily gazette which was printed and hung in the Roman Forum. This gazette would report news of Rome, such as military campaigns, executions, and trials. The Chinese also started government-produced news sheets called the taipo. While the "Acta" was the news for the entire populace of Rome, the taipo was only for the government officials until about 618 AD Those were the only noted types of printed news until 1456, when Gutenburg invented movable type. Soon after the printing press was invented, there was a written account of a tournament in Rome in about 1470. There were letters written by Christopher Columbus which were circulating Barcelona before Columbus returned from Spain in 1493. For about one-hundred-thirty years, there were pamphlets, sheets of paper, and books being printed and circulated with news events. Although these were written accounts of news utilizing movable type, they were not considered newspapers. Modern newspapers as we know them began in the late1500's. In 1566, the Venetian avisi began. This publication was regularly distributed throughout Venice. There was information about wars and politics in Italy and also the rest of Europe. They were printed weekly. This set the stage for other newspapers to follow the format outlined in those papers. They employed the style of using a dateline... ...than they ever had before, a circulation war was inevitable. As circulation wars heated up, newspapers were in competition to get the best news first. The wire services became born. Edward W. Scripps and William Randolph Hearst developed news services. Scripps started the Associated Press in 1907 and Hearst started the International News Service in 1909. As the country and its settlers realized their manifest destiny, the news services became very important to national news in city papers. After that point not too many events happened that really shaped the newspaper world. The age of the internet and computers has been the first thing to change newspapers in a long time. Now with the internet, the world is at everyone's fingertips. Never before had people had access to all of the information that they have now. Mappes Article Sexual Morality Essay

In the short article â€Å"Sexual Morality and the Concept of Using Another Person† by Thomas Mappes, there are several points that he makes about what should be considered morally right or wrong. Mappes sticks to three main points when it comes to what he considers morally right or wrong. These three cases are â€Å"using another person†, â€Å"deception of one by another†, and â€Å"coercion†. All three points basically revolve around how he feels that it is wrong for one person to in any way shape or form to use another person for sexual interaction. He bases this viewpoint around the â€Å"conventional† sexual morality which outlines that sex without love is immoral. I cannot say that I completely agree or disagree with his points that are made. This is not because I cannot see what he is trying to say but rather because I feel that there are many other view points to see this topic through. Firstly he talks about â€Å"using another person† in which he describes that it is wrong for one person to use another person merely as means. This is the general basis of his entire article. Though I do agree it is wrong for one person to use another person merely as sexual means, I see many situations in which both parties are using each other for the same thing. Not to have a further interaction or relationship after the matter. Mappes declares that â€Å"A immorally uses B if and only if A intentionally acts in a way that violates the requirement that B’s involvement with A’s ends be based on B’s Voluntary informed consent.† This basically means that if someone is to have sexual intercourse with another person then both people must agree to the others conditions as well as respect the others wishes. However in the point I made before, there are times that both parties are using each other for the same thing. In which case does it really matter if either party is completely honest with the other? The reason this is important is because if both parties want to have sexual intercourse with the other and have no other intentions with the other person, do they need to have a more in-depth relationship? Secondly he talks about deception of one person by another, in this he speaks about several different ways one could deceive another. In any which case, he views it as immoral to do so. Finally he voices his opinion about â€Å"Coercion†, in this case coercion is basically a complex word for â€Å"rape†.

Getting An Adequate Amount Of Sleep Each Night Is A Major

Getting an adequate amount of sleep each night is a major factor when considering your ability to have a functioning long term memory. If you’re not getting enough sleep your brain will have trouble consolidating the information that enters your head each day. The relation to the amount of sleep a person gets, and their ability to move information into their long term memory had not been studied much in adolescents until this study done by Katya Trudeau Potkin, who works at the Department of Human Biology at Brown University and William E. Bunney Jr who works at the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of California Irvine. The â€Å"sleep group† was read the list of words at 9pm, and were asked to recall the words 12 hours later after a good night’ s sleep, on the other hand the â€Å"no sleep† group was asked to recall the words at 9am, and then 12 hours later with no sleep leading up to it, they were asked to recall the words. As a result, there was a 20.6% increase in long term memory when looking at the participants who slept before they recalled the word pairs. (Potkin, Bunney) The next test that Katya and William performed on the same 40 kids was called a Letter-Number test. With this test the kids were given a long list of numbers and letters and then were asked to put the list in ascending order, so for example if they were given the sequence â€Å"3k2d† they would write it back â€Å"23dk†. The sleep group got to sleep before they recalled the sequence, and the no sleep group was not able to sleep. After removing the outliers of the two groups, the group numbers were 19 sleep participants, and 18 no sleep participants. The results for this test were a little different than they were for the declarative memory test. There was no significant difference in the sleep and the no sleep participants.
